Teens may qualify for the BEST study if they are 13-19 years old and ...
  • Have a parent or sibling diagnosed with bipolar disorder, mania, manic-depression or who experiences highs and lows in their mood
  • OR
  • Have parents/siblings with no history of emotional/behavioral disorders 

What does the study involve? 

Main Study: Compensation is up to $240 total

  • Visit 1: Teen (and parent if teen is <18 yr) complete interviews and questionnaires about sleep, mood & health to determine study eligibility. Visit 1 is conducted by phone or video interview. Compensation: Up to $80.
  • Sleep Tracking: If eligible, teens keep daily sleep records and wear an activity watch to monitor their sleep at-home. Compensation: Up tp $40.
  • Visit 2: Teens complete a brain scan at UPMC, computer tasks, and online questionnaires. Compensation: Up to $120.

Opt-in Study: Compensation is up to $230 total. Teens must be invited to complete this portion of the study.

  • Stable Sleep Schedule + Sleep Tracking: Teens keep a stable sleep schedule and sleep is monitored with daily sleep records and an activity watch at-home. Compensation: Up to $100.
  • Visit 3: Teens complete a second brain scan at UPMC, computer tasks, and online questionnaires. Compensation: Up to $130.

The SAND lab is taking all of the necessary precautions to keep our participants safe and healthy during these difficult times. We screen participants for COVID-19 symptoms before their visit and again at their visit. We will be providing face masks and hand sanitizer to all participants that come into the lab. We are thoroughly cleaning and sanitizing any and all surfaces that participants may come in contact with in accordance to the CDC guidelines. We will be sanitizing all surfaces after each participant visit. During participant’s visits, we will also be maintaining social distancing guidelines. All staff members are vaccinated and are screened for COVID-19 symptoms daily. All staff members will wear face masks and maintain social distancing guidelines at all times.
